![]() ![]() Students enrolled in Orem High School’s radio class are getting more than just a grade for listening to alternative music - they are learning the workings of a real radio station. “The students in the class create music logs, and learn to read meters on the transmitters. In addition, the students are required to get a radio license,” said Ken Seastrand, teacher of the radio classes. The station, KOHS 91.7 FM, is run by junior and senior students. “Sophomores and juniors take the beginning radio class. Those who receive a passing grade and show a desire to continue may be in the advanced radio class. The students in this (advanced) class get to do the actual radio shifts,” Seastrand said. Scott Blackwell, a junior at Orem High School, has been involved with the station for several years as a listener, and now as KOHS’ sports director. “My older brothers were sports broadcasters for the station, so I inherited the position from them,” he said.Īs sports director, Blackwell provides coverage of Orem High School football and basketball games. Seastrand said the class is designed to help students learn the responsibilities and duties involved in running a radio station. The students are each given a 90-minute radio shift beginning with the first broadcast at 9 a.m. Seastrand said the daytime shifts are the most coveted, although the evening shifts have more listeners. “Working with the radio gives me the opportunity to be part of the music scene. ![]() I also need to be up to date on the latest music.
